Legal Requirements
for Marrying in a Parish Church:
(1) At least one of you must be resident in the parish concerned, or be on the parish church’s Electoral Roll. [not the same as the local authority Electoral Roll]. The Team Rector’s policy in cases where residence is not clearly established is that you will need to demonstrate a long-standing strong and continuing connection with the parish. It is not sufficient grounds – alone - that either the bride’s/groom’s parents reside in the parish. If none of these apply it may be possible under certain limited circumstances for you to obtain a special license. If you are in any doubt please contact one of the local clergy, for guidance.

(2) If either of you does not live in the parish to complete the legal requirements you will need to

have your banns read in the parish they reside as well. You will need to contact the local parish office or priest to arrange this and to provide you with a certificate.

(3) If one you has been previously married to another person still living, please would you contact you local member of clergy straight away to see whether a church wedding is possible or indeed the most appropriate option for you. The policy in this Team Ministry is that there are circumstances under which it will be possible to conduct a marriage in Church for persons previously married, and we follow the Church of England 2000 discussion document Marriage in Church After Divorce which provides for consideration by the local clergy on an individual basis.
